Queenstown Salvation Army gets $1 million dollar boost for new facility

Queenstown’s Salvation Army has received a substantial boost to help pay for a brand new purpose built facility, designed to help the community’s most needy.

Remarkables Park Limited (RPL) is providing $1 million towards the construction of a new Salvation Army building on Pin Oak Avenue at Remarkables Park, Queenstown.

The 900sq m two-storey facility will be a combined congregation space, food bank, Family Store, and multi-function space in addition to offices and support facilities for staff and community ministries.

Salvation Army Chief Secretary Colonel Gerry Walker says: “With Covid-19, there is a substantial increase in the number of families and individuals who have fallen on hard times and need us more than ever before. The new building has been carefully designed to bring together sections of the Army and enable the expression of our mission to continue to support individuals in need, some of who are hungry, homeless, feeling overwhelmed or have other needs.”

“Remarkables Park Executive Chairman Alastair Porter says: “We are pleased to be able to assist The Salvation Army, who provide essential social services within the community. This support builds upon other Remarkables Park Limited community initiatives including  significant expenditure on development of  trails, a continued investment in The Remarkables Market and playground and assistance with the Wakatipu High School and Frankton Library.”

The Salvation Army’s presence at Remarkables Park will also add another layer to already existing community spaces  at Remarkables Park Town Centre, including Southern Institute of Technology, two childcare facilities, the Cancer Society ‘Canshop’, Queenstown Medical Centre, Pacific Radiology and Work & Income New Zealand.

Planning is underway for the new Salvation Army facility at Remarkables Park, with construction expected to commence by the end of the year and completion anticipated by the end of 2021.
